Our Department of Orthopaedics at the University Children’s Hospital Basel is the largest in Switzerland and one of the largest in Europe. It has been set up as an independent paediatric orthopaedic department 30 years ago by Prof. Fritz Hefti and Prof. Erwin Morscher.

Two endowed professorships (Paediatric Orthopaedics/Prof. C.Hasler and Neuroorthopaedics/Prof.E.Viehweger) are affiliated to the Medical faculty of the University of Basel.

The department is subdivided into 4 domains (spine – neuroorthopaedics/gaitlab – tumors/hip/limb deformities and sportorthopaedics/knee/upper limb&hand surgery) which cover the whole spectrum of conservative and operative paediatric orthopaedics.

The team consists of 8 full time consultants (Chef- und Leitende ÄrztInnen), 10 board certified orthopaedic surgeons (OberärztInnen) and 4 trainees/fellows. All divisions run own clinical and experimental research groups.
