Episode 17: A look behind the scenes of the JCO

The Journal of Children’s Orthopaedics, or JCO for short, is the open access scientific journal owned and produced by EPOS. With over 300,000 downloads in 2025 alone, the JCO has become a hugely important educational tool for paediatric orthopaedic surgeons around the world.

EPOS Podcast host Darius Rad has invited the JCO's Chief Editors Shlomo Wientroub and Fritz Hefti, as well as the journal's Liaison Councillor Marta Salom, to give you a rare look behind the scenes of the JCO, from how it got started, all the way to the impact it has today. They discuss, among other things, the use of AI in publishing, APC waivers and support for developing countries.

They also dig into two papers from the latest issue: a systematic review revealing that 1 in 7 children who experience orthopaedic trauma go on to develop PTSD, and a 10-year follow-up study on how femoral leg lengthening affects long-term muscle strength.
